Midgard by Chanimur Midgard by Chanimur
I haven't done an alternate history map in a loooooong time, so here's one.

This is Europe from the GURPS/Alternate Earths 2 world of Midgard, where Vikings conquered Constantinople in the 9th century and used all the loot (and Greek Fire) to crush the Christian nations and establish their own empires, much as the Germanic tribes did to the Romans a few centuries earlier.

(GURPS, Alternate Earths 2, and the world of Midgard were created by Kenneth Hite, Craig Neumeier, and Michael Schiffer and are property of Steve Jackson Games. The text in the title box is lifted directly from the intro in the game book.)

Looks like something that could happen in a game of Crusader Kings II

Nice but I think Svea Rike with an E in the end and divided up into two words would be more accurate.

As a swede from Uppsala, it is nice to see Uppsala plotted out but Stockholm under water and most other major cities in Europe is not even on the map!

Often natural borders like mountain ranges or rivers are chosen for state borders. The river Rhine acts as a border between the current Germany and France and Germany's eastern border is also a river. Though it doesn't always have to be that way. But it could be good to take it into account if you want a realistic scenario.

Very nice! It's a goodly thing to see you doing an AH map again, lovely as your fantasy maps are.

Oh, yeah, I still have that one! Glad to see someone else remembers that! Really great setting, both books (but it's GURPS, so that kind of goes without saying).

I'm a little surprised that Russia at least seems to be much more thoroughly Norse-fied here.

I didn't create the scenario, I just drew a map based on it (and based on a map in the game book). It's really not that surprising though; even in actual history, the Norse had all kinds of trade and trade-villages up and down the rivers of eastern Europe. The whole area was kind of porous and unsettled also, allowing the vast migrations and resettlements of the Magyars, Avars, etc. It's not unlikely that a loose confederation of city-states and trade outposts like Gardarika would be open enough to allow cross-migration.

But again, I didn't write the scenario, so...
