Circle of the World by Chanimur Circle of the World by Chanimur
Something new, created over the last couple of weeks.

-Terrain was created using real world physical data.
-Coats of Arms were created by me using a few free-for-use clipart pieces.
-City maps courtesy of Matt Jackson (www.msjx.org). Thanks, man!
-Fonts used were Optimus Princeps and Freebooter, both found at www.dafont.com.

This represents the 'civilized world' as drawn by a cartographer of the Basentine Empire, the most powerful nation in the known world, heir to the old Tarosian Empire. The known lands have a mainly Byzantine/eastern European feel in the south and west, northern European in the north/northwest. Ushtarna is a barbaric realm akin to REH's Cimmeria.

I've always been curious as to why coats of arms were designed the way they were -- what each part of it represents.  I'd like to know from where you drew inspiration for these pieces!

The whole map is beautiful, but the Coats of Arms are especially spectacular.

Very cool. Could I suggest the red background on the lower half border is unnecc. distracting from the map itself - any reason it shouldn't be grey-white like the rest?

Yeah, it probably does make it look bottom-heavy. A lesson for next time...

This is a very simple but impressive map. I really do like the inclusion of further details outside the map itself!

This is amazing even by the standards of your generally very impressive work. Fantastic work; well-worth the time you spent on it, I'd say.

When you said that the terrain was "created using real world physical data" did you mean you did your research and based the landmass on that, or did you use some sort of terrain generator?

I used images from NASA, US Topo, etc, re-sized and color-fixed 'em, etc.

Extemely cool. Is this a warmer world than ours, or is that just the east Pole? :)

It's not meant to be polar-oriented; it's simply the 'Civilized Circle' of the world. I would say the equator lies below the Great Southern Desert.

So those are purely decorative "latitude" and "longitude?" But it's a good 'un, never mind my nitpicking.

Any alternate history maps on the horizon?

Yep, just decorative. I thought they helped focus the circular look a bit.

I've been kind of burnt out on alternate history lately, but I have a couple of ideas percolating. Any suggestions?

Well, it would be cool if you were to revisit with your current skillz some of your old settings: the old "Song of my People" map with the Muscovite Empire extending across the Balkans to South Italy cries out for a world map, or an entirely new take on the notion of a Papal state with _plenty_ of military divisions. Then there was the "Reverse Draka", or the "Samarkand/No Mongols" world taken to the 20th century...

(If you want something _original_, I would be interested to see what you could do with an Alexandrian empire that lasts up until today in some form, or perhaps a Spain-wank...)
