Anneira Revisited by Chanimur Anneira Revisited by Chanimur
This is a remake of an earlier map; I've had some ideas for stories set in this world, but they necessitated a revamp of the setting, so here it is. Many of the names are recycled from that earlier map, as well as other previous maps. (Hey, it's a lot of work thinking up completely unique names every time! :D )

I owe the overall feel of this map to Ascension over at [link] The rivers were done using a tutorial by Arcana at the same place.

Hey Chanimur,

Can you do such a cool, sweet and short write-up of the eastern part of the map as well? That'd be very cool!
Oh and hope to see you a bit more active over on the CG :)

Cheers
E.

Absolutely beautiful! Very impressive stuff Chainmur, one of the better atlas style maps I've seen.

Nice, I imagine the Hundred Houses being sort of like pre-unification Germany, in political structure...?

In a way. They were united for a century or so by a king and his two successors, but then fell apart in a disastrous civil war, going back to their previous disunity.

Kool :) How are the empires on the right involved with one another, is it a loose alliance or even just a non-agression pact, or something more intwined?

They're old, powerful empires; each were formerly parts of the ancient Malcene Empire until it broke apart a millennium ago, as were the Houses and even the Republics. After the Malcenes disintegrated, rival generals took over huge tracts of the eastern part of the continent and set up their own successor empires. They're like the western Europe of our world - a similar set of cultural, moral, and religious values, but that doesn't prevent them from warring on each other, intermarrying, etc.

The Maritime Republics are sort of a fusion of Cromwellian England and Italian city-states; they practice a sort of Protestant-equivalent of the mainland religion, with a sort of oligarchic republican form of government. They usually act together on matters of war and trade, but are each independently governed. Additionally, they are colonizing powers; each of the four republics has large overseas colonies.

The Hundred Houses, as mentioned, bear some resemblence to feudal Germany/HRE - dozens of compteting states and statelets. They were united for about a century under a strong king and his two weak and crazy successors based out of Corolain, but a civil war put an end to that. Some of the more powerful Houses have overseas colonies like the Republics, but for the most part they're too caught up in war and political intrigue with their neighbors.

Gaellund is a Scots/Viking fusion - hardy semi-barbaric northerners. In the time of the Malcene Empire, they were tribal raiders, ravaging Anneira's coasts for treasure, but they've since settled down and have built a fairly strong kingdom. The Knurlanders to their north are their less-civilized cousins.

The Kingdom of Lithia is the Switzerland of this world - a crossroads nation, high in the mountains, constantly playing its neighbors against one another.
